Some car owners across the Greater Toronto area innocently searching for “towing company near me” got more than they bargained for, as almost $1 million worth of vehicles have been recovered by Durham police during their investigation in unlawful tow truck service practices. Among the vehicles they recovered were two luxury cars, a Ferrari 488 and a BMW M4.
Unlawful Tow Truck Practices in Toronto
The investigation, dubbed Project Bondar by police, began in October 2019 when several complaints of exorbitant tow truck service charges were made by car-owners after they were involved in motor vehicle accidents. Others said they were charged unreasonably high fees to recover vehicles that had already been towed.
The complaints lead to the issuing of search warrants stretching across the Toronto area, including Brampton, Scarborough, Etobicoke, Ajax, Clarington, Pickering and Whitby.
The investigation resulted in the laying of 250 charges include Consumer Protection Act, Provincial Offences Act and Criminal Code charges, ranging from unlawful towing and vehicle theft. In addition, police recovered 31 vehicles valued at approximately $900,000.
Do you want to avoid unfair towing practices? Always ask for rates in writing before agreeing to any tow truck services and ask to see a Government of Ontario Towing Consumer Bill of Rights before you agree to any services.
