After experiencing a car accident, instead of quickly googling “tow truck near me” some accident victims needn’t look that far for help.
In Waterloo, Ontario, about an hour outside of Toronto, tow truck drivers would often linger near accident scenes offering their tow truck services—similar to the notorious personal injury lawyers known as “ambulance chasers.”
Tow Truck Bylaw
But now, a justice of the peace has ruled that the bylaw, which states those offering tow truck services must stay 200 meters away from a crash site unless they’ve been specifically called, may violate the Highway Traffic Act.
The reason for the ruling? Justice of the Peace James Ziegler explained that the bylaw would limit tow truck drivers from attending the scene of an emergency, effectively stopping them from providing assistance to potential accident victims if they coincidentally came upon an accident scene before emergency officials, like police or ambulance, arrive.
Currently, the bylaw is under review, but tow truck drivers are encouraged to still abide by it until a final decision has been made or possibly face fines.
